Why Recreation Therapy?

Recreation Therapy is a modality of therapy that uses recreation and leisure as it’s main form of intervention to support individuals experiencing barriers in every day activities.

Programs are designed based on the individuals needs and interests so that goals and outcomes can be achieved. Therapeutic approaches foster connection, increase confidence, improve self-awareness in leisure and promote independence.

With a Recreation Therapist, individuals are able to improve their well-being, create a healthy lifestyle, and improve their mental health. Activities might look like trying something new or returning to a once loved hobby with supportive modifications. With knowledge and expertise in physical, emotional, spiritual, social and cognitive domains, activities will support each individual and their unique abilities.

Who benefits from Recreation Therapy?

Anyone who is experiencing a significant life change like a diagnosis, a life altering medical condition, a change in living situation, a developmental or physical disability, a dementia, have experienced a stroke, and many more.

As a Recreational Therapist, it is important to me that you feel safe and supported in your leisure journey. Creating a person-centered program means working with what interests the individual, while working within their abilities. If there is one thing to know about Recreation Therapy is that it provides choice to the individual and is always purposeful. This means that it is goal oriented with a focus on outcomes.
